What Is The Difference Between Medium and Gesso?

Liquid White (TM), Liquid Clear (TM) and all of the mediums I share with you on my videos have two very specific purposes.

It keeps the canvas wet so you can layer paints on top of each and it allows you to easily blend paints together on your canvas.

Gesso is an acrylic, water-based undercoat that you can put onto canvas before starting to paint. Typically one puts the Gesso on, let it dry, then add medium and finally, oil paints.

I generally use either Black or Grey or White acryllic depending upon the scene i’m trying to paint.

I go into this and the use of Liquid white/black/clear quite a bit in the Basic Techniques Of Oil Painting: Volume 1: Preparation.
