Hi Darrell, my wife and I received the DVD Basic Techniques of oil painting. You have done a nice job shooting them and we have enjoyed looking at them. We started out with Acrylic paints but have now went out and bought oils.
We see that it’s some what easier to work with oils, for us anyway, as we are still slow at painting and the paint doesn’t dry on us. However we still have some questions.
1. Do you thin the oil paint or use it as thick as it comes out of the tube.
[DARRELL] IT ALL DEPENDS. IF I’M DOING BASE COAT PAINTING I PRETTY MUCH USE IT AS IT COMES OUT OF THE TUBE. IF I’M HIGHLIGHTING I THIN THE PAINTS. IF I’M HAVING DIFFICULTIES LAYERING PAINT ON TOP OF PAINT, I THIN THE PAINTS.
2. We hear you talking about medium, is that to thin the paint and make it flow better? What do you use for a medium?
[DARRELL] THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT MEDIUM IS. THE THINNER PAINT “STICKS” TO THE THICKER PAINTS. I USED MANY KINDS OF MEDIUM DEPENDING ON WHAT I’M PAINTING. LANDSCAPES, SEASCAPES, FLORALS, PORTRAITS. I USE DIFFERENT MEDIUMS FOR EACH SO THERE’S NO ONE BRAND I’LL RECOMMEND. I DO COVER WHAT I’M USING
IN EACH OF MY VIDEOS.
3.What and how is liquid white used?
[DARRELL] MEDIUM WHITE IS USED TO WET THE CANVAS TO BEGIN WITH AND THEREAFTER TO THIN PAINTS. THIS ALLOWS THEM TO BLEND TOGETHER WELL WITH OTHER PINTS.
4.With Acrylics we just painted over our practice canvas with gesso and were ready to try again. How do we reuse our practice canvas with oils?
[DARRELL] NOT SO EASY WITH OILS. BASICALLY IF YOU DON’T LIKE YOUR PAINTING, SCRAPE IT OFF AND REDO IT. BUT THIS IS ONLY IF THE PAINTS ARE STILL WET. IF THEY’VE DRIED, DOUBT THAT’S THERE IS MUCH YOU CAN DO. MANY FOLKS HAVE TRIED OVEN OFF OR SOME OTHER REALLY SERIOUS CHEMICALS. I THINK ONE IS BETTER OFF MAKING AN INSTANT DECISION AND GETTING THE OLD SCRAPPER OUT IF THE PAINTING IS NOT GOOD.
It seems so easy when we watch you paint and are determined to practice until it becomes easy for us as well. We hear you say “just like that” in our minds but our hands haven’t gotten the message yet.
[DARRELL] AFTER YOU PRACTICE, IT WILL BECOME SO SECOND NATURE TO YOU THAT YOU’RE JUST CONCENTRATING ON WHAT YOU’RE PAINTING AND NOT HOW YOU’RE PAINTING.
