The Basic Techniques of Painting Seascapes Began At Monterey, CA In 1957

I think my love of the sea began, back in 1957.  At eight years of age that is.

I lived smack dab in the middle of the USA in a state called, Illinois.

Yes.  I realize there’s no seashore in Illinois.

I’d been fishing quite a bit, even been to a swimming pool once, but couldn’t swim a lick.

Then Dad joins the Army and the next thing you know, we’re living in Monterey, California.  In fact, the apartment we lived in was on Lighthouse Ave.  (Don’t ask me how I remember the street name.)  Lighthouse Ave’s biggest claim to fame was that it was three blocks from Canary Rd.  I rode my bike up and down Canary Rd more times than I care to remember.

On Saturday’s Dad would take my brother and I for long walks up and down the Monterey coastline.  I loved the sea and the sound of the seals barking. I spent hours just watching the waves crashing against the rocks and shore.

As an artist, seascapes hold a special allure for me…..almost magical.  I enjoy the whole process of painting seascapes and telling a story with my paintings.  Each seascape takes me back to Monterey and 1957.
