We are finalizing the series on The Basic Techniques of Color Mixing today. This means I can tell you all about it this evening.
This is in response to literally hundreds of students sending me questions on how to mix colors and the paints I use.
We’ve put together a series of four (4) DVDs which will cover the basics.
A few weeks ago I sent out an email inviting students to submit to me their top ten questions. And the response was staggering….. And it became very clear that one of the top few questions centered around how to choose and mix paints. In fact, I was able to group the questions into four simple questions Read the rest of this entry »

Darrell, I have a question ……….. or two.
Thanks for the bonus…. Now my first question is about the #9 Seascapes–bonus pdf file. I was trying to match this pdf file with a painting. It does not seem to describe the steps in the seascape dvd? Which painting does it describe?
It also mentions cleaning brushes with orderless cleaner. I thought you only used baby oil? Was this an earlier method?
Brushes: I bought several Sabel-soft handle brushes for $2.98 less 15%. (small sizes for detail work). Could they be any good at this price?
What type of brush should be used for what purpose? You mention: bristle–natural hair–synthetic! Do they have different uses?
Thanks,

The other day I came across an extraordinary suggestion in an art magazine.
But first, let me ask you a question….
Have you noticed how many different stores are closed in shopping malls and downtown areas these days? Wow. Last week I was introduced to ‘mall walking’ by my 83-year old uncle. Every day he walks 5 miles at one of three or four malls in the Carbondale-Murphysboro area. As I joined him for two days, I got to really see that nearly 15% of the stores were closed.
Hey, the President says we’re now in recovery……I’m not arguing…….I’m just seeing about 15% of the store window fronts marked “Out of Buiness.” Read the rest of this entry »

I recently spilled some oil paint on my new shoes and didn’t notice it. It dried. Anybody have any tips on what could clean my shoes of the paint. It also got some paint on the cuffs of my jeans.
Any help or suggestions would be really helpful.

Spent last night in Clearfield, PA.
Small, lively Appalachian town on a river just about 3 miles past the summit (Highest point east of the Mississippi) on Interstate 80.
We drove around town and visited a view shops, including the local Wal-Mart. I decided to check out the nursery. I wanted to see if they had Red Bud Trees and how far north they would grow. That’s how I met Deb. This nursery manager was a proud riot. Very proud of ‘her’ Wal-Mart. Been working there since it opened just over 17 years ago. It was the first “Super” Wal-Mart in Pennsylvania and she’s worked in most departments. Read the rest of this entry »

Hi Everyone,
Hope you’ve had a great weekend.
We just finished up ours in Breese, IL. Early this morning we drove up from Murphysboro to my cousin’s Andy and Colleta Straeter’s farm outside of Breese.
Nice farm. Andy has a hundred acres that he farms as well as a big equipment and excavation business. It would take a week to talk about what all he does, but needless to say they if the dirt needs to be touched, moved, dug, piled, scrapped or discarded, Andy is the man.

Finished the visit at my sisters this morning and headed south for a couple of hours to my ole home town, Murphysboro, IL. My uncle, Odell, and his family lives here along with a thousand other old crows.
It’s been a long time since we chatted and I’d forgotten the laid back lifestyle of country folks. All day folks just pulled up in their cars and trucks and started to chat. Took us nearly two hours to just walk from the car to the house.

I’ll always remember this moment on Easter Morning, standing at the foot of Calgary in the South of France. Hiking up a trail we found a lonely, deserted church with a remembrance of Caligary in its backyard. All of I could think of then was the song…..It Should Have Been Me.
Happy Easter.
